WPIAL Insider Players of the Week: Week 8


6A: Jake Cortes QB Peters Township

Cortes helped Peters Township clinch a playoff spot by defeating Canon-McMillan 28-14. Cortes was 17 of 26 and threw for 347 yards, all while throwing for two touchdowns.


5A: Brady Walker QB Gateway

It was a big night for Walker, in which he became Gateway’s all time leading passer and moved into seventh place on the WPIAL all time passing yardage list. That wasn’t all for Walker, as he helped propel Gateway into second place in the Big East Conference by going 17 for 33 and throwing for 281 yards. In addition to the 281 yards, he tacked on three passing touchdowns in a 21-18 win against McKeesport.


4A: Justin Vigna RB Thomas Jefferson

Vigna, had a big night for the Jaguars, rushing for 188 yards and scoring four touchdowns in the 42-0 win over Laurel Highlands. Vigna scored on runs of 10, 40, 6, and 50 yards all on the ground for Thomas Jefferson.


3A: Dustin Shoaf RB Yough

Shoaf was “Mr. Everything” for the Yough Cougars in the 49-38 win against over Southmoreland. Shoaf rushed for astounding 433 yards, while adding five rushing touchdowns on runs of 2, 8, 10, 15 and 56 yards. He also added a 7 yard touchdown pass for good measure.


2A: Geno Pellegrini QB Charleroi

Pellegrini threw for 314 yards and three touchdowns. He added a 49-yard scamper in the 49-44 win in a big game against Beth Center. Charleroi clinched the #2 playoff spot out of the Century Conference.


1A: Tawaun Wesley QB Imani Christian

Wesley was 11 of 12 while throwing for 358 yards and adding six passing touchdowns in the 66-16 victory against Springdale.
